PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM (The Cultural Impact of the Opium Poppy)
This is an opportunity to extend previous enquiry into the “Language of Flowers”. By initially focussing specifically on a single flower, the poppy, it enables in-depth research. The poppy has shaped the world in respect of its power medicinally, and this has extended its influence politically, from the “silk road” to warfare. Poppy has both the power to heal and to hurt. Symbolically, it is used both in art to represent sleep, death and mythological figures, as well as being used as a political emblem, i.e. the poppy appeal for the British Legion. It is envisaged that each work will focus on a particular element of the relationship. This flower also has an intrinsic beauty that graces our gardens.
